RESUMO

Environmental niche modeling (ENM) has emerged as a promising tool for identifying grass species with potential for rangeland restoration. This approach can detect suitable areas and environments where these species can be planted. In this study, we employed ENM to estimate the potential distribution range of 50 grass species of the grasslands and shrublands of northern Mexico. The outcome of the ENM served to identify grass species with potential for restoration in Mexico, especially those not commonly used for that purpose in the past. Results suggested the possibility of selecting seven grass species with the potential for revegetating degraded grasslands, nine for shrublands, and six for alkaline soils. This research provides insights into the environmental adaptations of different grass species distributed in the rangelands of northern Mexico. Ecologists, conservation planners, researchers, and range managers could use these outcomes and the maps of the potential distribution ranges as supportive information to conduct effective restoration efforts. In turn, this can assist in increasing the probability of success of future rangelands restoration programs, which are often costly in terms of financial investments and labor.

RESUMO

Organotin complexes were prepared through a one-pot reaction with three components by reacting thiosemicarbazide or 4-methyl-3-thiosemicarbazide or 4-phenylthiosemicarbazide, dehydroacetic acid (DHA) and dibutyl, diphenyl, dicyclohexyl, and bis[(trimethylsilyl)methyl]tin(IV) oxides; all complexes were characterized by infrared (IR), ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis), mass spectrometry (MS), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The 119Sn NMR revealed chemical shifts corresponding to a pentacoordinated environment in solution. The X-ray crystallography of the two complexes evidenced the formation of monomeric complexes with a pentacoordinated geometry around tin via three donor atoms from the ligand, the sulfur of the thiol, the nitrogen of the imine group, and the oxygen of the pyran ring. The geometries of the five-coordinated complexes 3a (Bu2SnL3), 3c (Ph2SnL3), and 3d (Cy2SnL3) acid were intermediate between square pyramidal and trigonal bipyramidal, and complex 1a (Bu2SnL1) adopted a bipyramidal trigonal geometry (BPT). The sulforhodamine B assay assessed the cytotoxicity of organotin(IV) complexes against the MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7 (human mammary adenocarcinoma) cell lines and one normal COS-7 (African green monkey kidney fibroblast). The IC50 values evidenced a significant antiproliferative effect on cancer cells; the complexes were more potent than the positive cisplatin control and the corresponding ligands, dehydroacetic acid thiosemicarbazone (L1), dehydroacetic acid-N(4)-methylthiosemicarbazone (L2), and dehydroacetic acid-N(4)-phenylthiosemicarbazone (L3). The IC50 values also indicated that the organotin(IV) complexes were more cytotoxic against the triple-negative breast cell line MDA-MB-231 than MCF-7, inducing significant morphological alterations. The interactions of organotin(IV) 1c (Ph2SnL1), 1d (Cy2SnL1), and 1e (((CH3)3SiCH2)2SnL1) were evaluated with ss-DNA by fluorescence; intensity changes of the fluorescence were indicative of the displacement of ethidium bromide (EB), confirming the interaction of the organotin(IV) complexes with ss-DNA; the results showed a DNA binding affinity. The thermodynamic parameters obtained through isothermal titration calorimetry showed that the interaction of 1c (Ph2SnL1), with ss-ADN, was exothermic. Molecular docking studies also demonstrated that the organotin(IV) complexes were intercalated in DNA by conventional hydrogen bonds, carbon-hydrogen bonds, and π-alkyl interactions. These complexes furthermore showed a greater affinity towards DNA than cisplatin.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: This study was aimed at determining the effect of sugammadex versus a combination of glycopyrrolate and neostigmine (GN) for neuromuscular reversal blockage on transient postoperative urinary retention (TPOUR) in patients undergoing a laparoscopic and robot-assisted laparoscopic hysterectomy. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study in patients undergoing a laparoscopic or robotic hysterectomy between February 2017 and December 2021. Patients with and without concomitant procedures were included. Demographics and perioperative data were extracted from the patient's medical record. Before discharge, all patients were required to spontaneously void and have a post-void residual of less than 150 ml. RESULTS: We identified 500 patients and 485 were included in the final analysis. We had 319 subjects who received sugammadex and 166 GN combination. Both groups had overall similar demographics and perioperative characteristics. Most patients had a conventional laparoscopy procedure (391 [82.5%]) compared with robotic (83 [17.5%]). Patients who received GN were significantly more likely to be discharged home with an indwelling catheter (odds ratio [OR], 1.82; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.09-3.05). After adjusting for perioperative medications and sling implantation during the surgery a logistic regression model continued to demonstrate that patients who received GN had significantly higher odds of being discharged with a catheter (OR, 1.79; 95% CI, 1.03-3.12). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that sugammadex decreases the odds of TPOUR after laparoscopic hysterectomies with and without slings compared with the combination of GN. Additional prospective trials are required to confirm this finding.

RESUMO

As a new approach, pyrrolo[1,2-a]pyrazines were synthesized through the cyclization of 2-formylpyrrole-based enaminones in the presence of ammonium acetate. The enaminones were prepared with a straightforward method, reacting the corresponding alkyl 2-(2-formyl-1H-pyrrol-1-yl)acetates, 2-(2-formyl-1H-pyrrol-1-yl)acetonitrile, and 2-(2-formyl-1H-pyrrol-1-yl)acetophenones with DMFDMA. Analogous enaminones elaborated from alkyl (E)-3-(1H-pyrrol-2-yl)acrylates were treated with a Lewis acid to afford indolizines. The antifungal activity of the series of substituted pyrroles, pyrrole-based enaminones, pyrrolo[1,2-a]pyrazines, and indolizines was evaluated on six Candida spp., including two multidrug-resistant ones. Compared to the reference drugs, most test compounds produced a more robust antifungal effect. Docking analysis suggests that the inhibition of yeast growth was probably mediated by the interaction of the compounds with the catalytic site of HMGR of the Candida species.

RESUMO

The main objective of this study was to analyze perinatal outcomes of women with substance use disorder in pregnancy who participated in the West Virginia University Medicine Drug Free Moms and Babies Assist Connect and Encourage program (DFMB/ACE) compared to women who were not enrolled in the program. This was a retrospective cohort study conducted in an l Academic Tertiary Care Center. Women who enrolled in DFMB/ACE services from 2018 to 2019 were termed as the intervention group. Their outcomes were compared to 734 women who delivered at the hospital between July 2015 and December 2019 with a positive urine drug screen on admission but were not enrolled in the DFMB/ACE program. Perinatal outcomes evaluated include low birth weight, preterm labor, neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admission, preterm birth, neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS), cesarean delivery, cord toxicology result, hepatitis c prevalence, and breastfeeding at the time of discharge. Participants of the DFMB/ACE group had a lower risk of having a preterm birth (OR = 0.56 95% CI 0.36-0.86) compared to the control group. The DFMB/ACE group had higher birth weight compared to the non-DFMB group (2865.7 g. vs. 2657.9 g, p = 0.004). NICU admission, NAS, mode of delivery, cord toxicology, and breastfeeding rates were not statistically different between the two groups. Hepatitis C rates were significantly higher in the intervention vs. non-intervention group (OR = 2.74 95 %CI 1.80 - 4.16). We concluded that the DFMB/ACE program interventions for women with substance use in pregnancy improves some perinatal outcomes for mothers and their newborns.

RESUMO

The increase in the surface and groundwater contamination due to global population growth, industrialization, proliferation of pathogens, emerging pollutants, heavy metals, and scarcity of drinking water represents a critical problem. Because of this problem, particular emphasis will be placed on wastewater recycling. Conventional wastewater treatment methods may be limited due to high investment costs or, in some cases, poor treatment efficiency. To address these issues, it is necessary to continuously evaluate novel technologies that complement and improve these traditional wastewater treatment processes. In this regard, technologies based on nanomaterials are also being studied. These technologies improve wastewater management and constitute one of the main focuses of nanotechnology. The following review describes wastewater's primary biological, organic, and inorganic contaminants. Subsequently, it focuses on the potential of different nanomaterials (metal oxides, carbon-based nanomaterials, cellulose-based nanomaterials), membrane, and nanobioremediation processes for wastewater treatment. The above is evident from the review of various publications. However, nanomaterials' cost, toxicity, and biodegradability need to be addressed before their commercial distribution and scale-up. The development of nanomaterials and nanoproducts must be sustainable and safe throughout the nanoproduct life cycle to meet the requirements of the circular economy.

RESUMO

Current antidiabetic drugs have severe side effects, which may be minimized by new selective molecules that strongly inhibit α-glucosidase and weakly inhibit α-amylase. We have synthesized novel alkoxy-substituted xanthones and imidazole-substituted xanthones and have evaluated them for their in silico and in vitro α-glucosidase and α-amylase inhibition activity. Compounds 6c, 6e, and 9b promoted higher α-glucosidase inhibition (IC50 = 16.0, 12.8, and 4.0 µM, respectively) and lower α-amylase inhibition (IC50 = 76.7, 68.1, and >200 µM, respectively) compared to acarbose (IC50 = 306.7 µM for α-glucosidase and 20.0 µM for α-amylase). Contrarily, derivatives 10c and 10f showed higher α-amylase inhibition (IC50 = 5.4 and 8.7 µM, respectively) and lower α-glucosidase inhibition (IC50 = 232.7 and 145.2 µM, respectively). According to the structure-activity relationship, attaching 4-bromobutoxy or 4'-chlorophenylacetophenone moieties to the 2-hydroxy group of xanthone provides higher α-glucosidase inhibition and lower α-amylase inhibition. In silico studies suggest that these scaffolds are key in the activity and interaction of xanthone derivatives. Enzymatic kinetics studies showed that 6c, 9b, and 10c are mainly mixed inhibitors on α-glucosidase and α-amylase. In addition, drug prediction and ADMET studies support that compounds 6c, 9b, and 10c are candidates with antidiabetic potential.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Sacral neuromodulation (SNM) is a commonly performed procedure for various conditions. Infection rates range as high as 10% and often require operative explantation with resultant increased cost and morbidity. Pouches impregnated with antibiotic have been utilized in cardiovascular procedures with decreasing infectious complications. TYRX is an antibiotic pouch utilizing minocycline and rifampin manufactured by Medtronic. The objective of this study is to investigate the utility of antimicrobial pouches for patients undergoing SNM. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed our patients undergoing SNM using an antimicrobial pouch and compared them with a historic cohort. Additional variables of interest included post-operative infection, diagnosis of diabetes, weight, and revision case or virgin implant. RESULTS: A total of 170 cases were identified, ranging from March 2017 to November 2022. Overall infection rate was 2.9% with 0 in the antimicrobial pouch cohort (0%) versus 5 in the historic cohort (5.5%; p = 0.04). Groups were similar in terms of body habitus. The group receiving an antimicrobial pouch was noted to be older with a higher percentage of female patients. 85 patients received an antimicrobial pouch and 85 did not. Of the infections, 4 occurred in revision cases (6.9%) and 1 in a virgin implant (0.9%; p = 0.03). No difference was noted in infection rate with regard to a diagnosis of diabetes or body habitus. CONCLUSION: The use of antimicrobial pouches in SNM is associated with a decreased rate of infectious complications. Revision cases displayed a higher rate of infectious complications.

RESUMO

Objective. The TOPAS-nBio Monte Carlo track structure simulation code, a wrapper of Geant4-DNA, was extended for its use in pulsed and longtime homogeneous chemistry simulations using the Gillespie algorithm.Approach. Three different tests were used to assess the reliability of the implementation and its ability to accurately reproduce published experimental results: (1) a simple model with a known analytical solution, (2) the temporal evolution of chemical yields during the homogeneous chemistry stage, and (3) radiolysis simulations conducted in pure water with dissolved oxygen at concentrations ranging from 10µM to 1 mM with [H2O2] yields calculated for 100 MeV protons at conventional and FLASH dose rates of 0.286 Gy s-1and 500 Gy s-1, respectively. Simulated chemical yield results were compared closely with data calculated using the Kinetiscope software which also employs the Gillespie algorithm.Main results. Validation results in the third test agreed with experimental data of similar dose rates and oxygen concentrations within one standard deviation, with a maximum of 1% difference for both conventional and FLASH dose rates. In conclusion, the new implementation of TOPAS-nBio for the homogeneous long time chemistry simulation was capable of recreating the chemical evolution of the reactive intermediates that follow water radiolysis.Significance. Thus, TOPAS-nBio provides a reliable all-in-one chemistry simulation of the physical, physico-chemical, non-homogeneous, and homogeneous chemistry and could be of use for the study of FLASH dose rate effects on radiation chemistry.

RESUMO

Wastewaters are nutrient-rich organic materials containing significant concentrations of different nutrients, dissolved and particulate matter, microorganisms, solids, heavy metals, and organic pollutants, including aromatic xenobiotics. This variety makes wastewater treatment a technological challenge. As a result of wastewater treatment, biosolids are generated. Biosolids, commonly called sewage sludge, result from treating and processing wastewater residuals. Increased biosolids, or activated sludge, from wastewater treatment is a major environmental and social problem. Therefore, sustainable and energy-efficient wastewater treatment systems must address the water crisis and environmental deterioration. Although research on wastewater has received increasing attention worldwide, the significance of biosolids treatments and valorization is still poorly understood in terms of obtaining value-added products. Hence, in this review, we established some leading technologies (physical, chemical, and biological) for biosolids pretreatment. Later, the research focuses on natural treatment by fungal enzymes to end with lignocellulosic materials and xenobiotic compounds (polyaromatic hydrocarbons) as a carbon source to obtain biobased chemicals. Finally, this review discussed some recent trends and promising renewable resources within the biorefinery approach for bio-waste conversion to value-added by-products.

RESUMO

In males, the function of the pubococcygeus muscle (Pcm) shows a high androgen dependency. High sucrose intake increases testosterone levels in pubertal male rats. We aimed to analyze the Pcm reflex activity and fiber type in response to a 30 % sucrose diet. Wistar male rats were assigned into two groups: control and sugar. The Pcm electromyographic activity was recorded during the mechanical stimulation of the scrotal skin and penis. We also determined the relative levels of Glut4 expression, glycogen content, myofiber cross-sectional area (CSA), and the content of glycolytic and oxidative with NADH-TR or fast, intermediate, and slow fibers with alkaline (pH 9.4) ATPase histochemistry. The sugar group showed a short Pcm reflex activity, a higher Glut4 expression, and glycogen content; the CSA fibers showed a significant difference in the percentage of fibers with the different transversal areas. The number of nuclei was positively correlated with the CSA of the Pcm fibers. There was also a decrease in oxidative fibers but an increase in glycolytic fibers, while the content of fast muscle fibers increased to the detriment of intermediate and slow fibers. Thus, a high-sugar diet reduced Pcm reflex activity, fiber type, and dysregulation of skeletal muscle energy metabolism.

RESUMO

Introduction: Medical reports of patients admitted to the emergency services has been modified due to the social distancing needed in the COVID-19 epidemic. For this reason, it is essential to know the family members' perceptions about telephone medical reports. Objective: To determine the perception of care by family members of patients hospitalized due to COVID-19 on telephone medical reports in a tertiary hospital's emergency room in Lima, Peru. Methods: A non-experimental cross-sectional study, through a survey of family members of patients with COVID-19 admitted during July and August 2020. The "External user satisfaction survey of the Ministry of Health" adapted to this setting was used due to the absence of similar studies. Information, respect for the user, efficiency, accessibility, suitability, security, and overall satisfaction were considered. The sample size for finite populations was selected from 2 936 family members, obtaining 347 surveys from 641 calls. Relatives were called by phone, and after acceptance, the survey was sent to them via WhatsApp in Google Forms format. Once the survey was received, it was analyzed using descriptive statistical techniques. Results: We made 641 telephone calls with a response rate of 54.1%, obtaining 347 surveys. The mean age was 40.12 years (standard deviation: 11.93 years), with 61.4% of females and 38.0% married. We found that 65.1% received higher education and that Chorrillos was the most prevalent district (10.1%). Moreover, 42.4% of those surveyed were children of hospitalized patients, 17.3% were spouses, and 85% were not health personnel. We found a high level of agreement in overall satisfaction (73.2%) and in most dimensions, including information (88.8%), respect for the user (82.1%), efficiency (70.3%), accessibility (75.8%), suitability (79.0%), and security (87.9%). Conclusion: The telephone medical reports to relatives of patients hospitalized due to COVID-19 in the emergency room found an overall satisfaction of 73.2% . Telephone medical reports are essential alternatives to improve the quality of care during the COVID-19 epidemic.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Nasal chondromesenchymal hamartomas (NCMHs) are benign, slow-growing lesions formed by mesenchymal and cartilaginous components. They occur predominantly in male infants at the nasopharynx and orbit. Rare cases have been reported in adults. Ectopic NCMHs occurring in other head regions without the typical nasopharyngeal or orbital involvement have not been previously described. OBSERVATIONS: The authors presented the case of a 40-year-old woman with a giant mass in the left frontoparietal region that started to enlarge progressively after the patient's first pregnancy at the age of 21 years. The tumor caused intense headaches, nausea, vomiting, asthenia, and syncope. On admission, the neurological examination revealed no abnormalities. Brain magnetic resonance imaging showed a solid homogeneous tumor without intraaxial involvement extending inferiorly to the left zygomatic arch, with a significant mass effect on the adjacent bones but no infiltration. Remarkably, digital subtraction angiography demonstrated that the tumor received blood supply from superficial as well as intracranial branches of the left vertebral artery. After tumor resection, histopathological analysis revealed characteristics indistinguishable from an NCMH. LESSONS: The authors described a rare NCMH of the scalp with intracranial blood supply in an adult patient. A case with similar characteristics had not been reported before.

RESUMO

Current Monte Carlo simulations of DNA damage have been reported only at ambient temperature. The aim of this work is to use TOPAS-nBio to simulate the yields of DNA single-strand breaks (SSBs) and double-strand breaks (DSBs) produced in plasmids under low-LET irradiation incorporating the effect of the temperature changes in the environment. A new feature was implemented in TOPAS-nBio to incorporate reaction rates used in the simulation of the chemical stage of water radiolysis as a function of temperature. The implemented feature was verified by simulating temperature-dependentG-values of chemical species in liquid water from 20 °C to 90 °C. For radiobiology applications, temperature dependent SSB and DSB yields were calculated from 0 °C to 42 °C, the range of available published measured data. For that, supercoiled DNA plasmids dissolved in aerated solutions containing EDTA irradiated by Cobalt-60 gamma-rays were simulated. TOPAS-nBio well reproduced published temperature-dependentG-values in liquid water and the yields of SSB and DSB for the temperature range considered. For strand break simulations, the model shows that the yield of SSB and DSB increased linearly with the temperature at a rate of (2.94 ± 0.17) × 10-10Gy-1Da-1°C-1(R2 = 0.99) and (0.13 ± 0.01) × 10-10Gy-1Da-1°C-1(R2 = 0.99), respectively. The extended capability of TOPAS-nBio is a complementary tool to simulate realistic conditions for a large range of environmental temperatures, allowing refined investigations of the biological effects of radiation.

RESUMO

Rapid screening tools are useful for identifying at-risk patients and referring them for further assessment and treatment, but none exist that consider the unique medical needs of pregnant women with eating disorders (EDs). There is a need for a rapid, sensitive, and specific screening tool that can be used to identify a potential ED in pregnancy. We started with a set of 25 questions, developed from our qualitative work along with other ED screening tools, and tested on a development (n = 190) and validation sample (n = 167). Statistical analysis included factor analysis and logistic regressions with ROC curves. Development and validation samples were combined for trimester analysis (n = 357). Refining the tool to 12 items demonstrated strong internal reliability (development alpha = 0.95, validation alpha = 0.91). With correlated errors, questions demonstrated acceptable CFA fit (development: GFI: 0.91, RMSEA: 0.10, NNFI: 0.95; validation: GFI: 0.85, RMSEA: 0.14, NNFI: 0.86). Similar fits were seen by trimester: first trimester n = 127, GFI: 0.89, RMSEA: 0.12, NNFI: 0.94; second trimester n = 150, GFI: 0.83, RMSEA: 0.14, NNFI: 0.88; third trimester n = 80, GFI: 0.99, NNFI: 0.99. Validation against current ED diagnosis demonstrated acceptable sensitivity and specificity using a cutoff of 39 (development sensitivity = 80.7%, specificity = 79.7%, OR = 16.42, 95% CI: 7.51, 35.88; validation sensitivity = 69.2%, specificity = 86.5%, OR: 17.43, 95% CI: 6.46, 47.01). Findings suggest the PEBS tool can reliably and sensitively detect EDs across pregnancy trimesters with 12 questions. A further implication of this work is to reduce health and mental health treatment disparities through this standard and rapid screening measure to ensure early identification and treatment.

The research proposes to show how the authors visualize the management process of the Research Labor Training or Research Labor Practice at the Manuel Fajardo University of Physical Culture and Sport Sciences. Starting from the approval of the Study Plan E, it is considered the integrating discipline of the career, it constitutes the transversal axis that favors the scientific direction of the teaching-educational process and integrates par excellence the contents of different subjects and the organizational components of the formative process through an interdisciplinary approach in the solution of professional problems that allows students to identify themselves, develop with what to do and their way of professional performance. For this purpose, it is proposed as an objective to elaborate methodological actions aimed at the management of the Research Labor Training process. In the research, historical background, theoretical and methodological references of the sample under study were systematized, as well as scientific methods of the theoretical, empirical and mathematical level, including document analysis, observation and interview. The results obtained in the diagnosis revealed the need to elaborate the proposal of methodological actions that will contribute to the management of the process and in turn will favor the development and praxis execution of the acquired knowledge and professional skills.
